Kell Brook vs Luis Galarza Fight Preview

Dan Hunter - 15 Dec 2011
''Special K'' looking to dazzle on his US debut

Sheffield's red hot welterweight sensation Kell ''Special K'' Brook makes his US debut when he takes on Puerto Rican Luis ''El Taino'' Galarza on the Carl Froch v Andre Ward Super Six World Boxing Classic final undercard at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City this Saturday night. 24 year old Brook is rightly regarded as one of the best British fighters on the scene right now, and is currently ranked 7th by both the IBF and WBA, and no.2 by the WBO. He is on the verge of fighting for a version of the world title in 2012 and if he were to come unstuck against Galarza, it would be an unmitigated disaster for Brook in particular and British boxing in general.

Brook v Galarza will be screened live on Sky Sports 1, the action starts at midnight.

25-year-old Brook (25-0, 17 KOs), the former British welterweight champion and current holder of both the WBA and WBO Intercontinental titles, looked masterful in his previous fight – a sixth round TKO over the highly rated Pole Rafal Jackiewicz in October. It was another outstanding performance in what has been the best twelve months of Brook's seven-year pro career so far.

Last December, Brook overwhelmed lanky Ghanaian puncher Philip Kotey in just two rounds in a WBO Intercontinental welterweight title defense. In June of this year he comprehensively outboxed the former IBF light welterweight champion Lovemore N'dou. Although Brook would have dearly loved to have been the first man to stop the tough South African, there was no disgrace in outpointing a man who has lasted the distance with the likes of Saul Alvarez, Matthew Hatton, Kermit Cintron, Junior Witter, Sharmba Mitchell and Miguel Cotto to name but a few.

His destruction of the highly rated Jackiewicz followed, and firmly established Brook as one of the top five welterweight contenders in the world.

The 147 lb division is arguably the strongest in boxing today, with the two top fighters in the world - pound-for-pound - holding welterweight championship belts. Unbeaten 34-year-old American superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr is the WBC champion, and Filipino modern-great Manny Pacquiao is the current WBO kingpin. Aside from these two, Andre Berto recently became a two-time welterweight champion when he wrestled the IBF belt from Jan Zeveck in September. The WBA title is held by the undefeated Ukrainian Vyacheslav Senchenko, and his is the title most likely to be targeted by Brook's brain trust, i.e. his promotional team led by Matchroom's Eddie Hearn, in 2012.

Before Brook can even think about a world title fight, he must impress the thousands at ringside and the millions more watching on TV via both Showtime in the US and Sky in the UK and put on a star performance against Galarza. In a statement this week, Brook admitted he was nervous yet confident about Saturday's fight:

"There's probably more pressure on me for this fight than the Lovemore N'dou and Rafal Jackiewicz fights in a way," said Brook. "There's going to be a lot of attention and some of the most important people in boxing both in Atlantic City and watching on TV and they want to see what I can do. Galarza will be aware of that too and he'll be looking to win the fight well, no doubt about that. So I'm aware of the pressure and I know that a lot is expected of me - but I'm here to deliver that dazzling performance and show America that I've really arrived on the world scene. I always get nervous before fights but it doesn't kick in until I'm on the way to the weigh-in then you see the opponent and you think "right, this is happening now" and it focuses you."

29-year-old Luis Galarza (17-2, 13 KOs) was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico but now resides in Antioch, Tennessee. His nickname of ''El Taino'' comes from the Taino Indian tribe that is native to Puerto Rico. He turned pro in October 2001 with a second round TKO over Jimmy Harding and was unbeaten in his first seven fights before losing a 10 round split decision to Anthony Bowman in January 2004. Galarza was TKO'd in three rounds by journeyman Jose Angel Roman in February 2006 and it remains his last defeat thus far.

The Puerto Rican is currently on an eight bout winning streak, seven of those wins coming inside the distance. In his last fight in July of this year, Galarza won an eight round split-decision over veteran contender Paul Delgado in a grueling fight. It was a career best victory for Galarza over a fighter who had challenged Jan Zaveck for the IBF welterweight title just five months earlier.

The Puerto Rican is a big welterweight at 5'11", and comes to fight. He is neither a great boxer nor a devastating puncher, but he gives 110% in the ring, and after his big win over Delgado, will firmly believe that he can gatecrash Kell Brook's US 'coming out party' and firmly established himself as a contender in his own right.

So far in Brook's career he has been nothing less than totally focused and professional, and has taken every opponent he has faced seriously. That is unlikely to suddenly change in Atlantic City on Saturday night, which is bad news for Galarza, because his only hope would be that Brook's mind might be on bigger fights in 2012. A fully focused Brook will take advantage of Galarza's leaky defense and slow punches, and score with his own vicious counter shots.

The Puerto Rican will try his best to rough up Brook and throw him out of his stride by barging him into the ropes, but Kell is a powerfully built 5'9" welterweight, and Galarza is unlikely to match him even in body strength. It all bodes well for the boy from Sheffield, who should systematically take Galarza apart with powerful head and body punches. Galarza is unlikely to quit, but by round five Brook will be teeing off at will, leaving the referee no option but to stop the fight. .

Brook by TKO in five.

Fight Odds: Kell Brook 1/250, Luis Galarza 22/1 bet365
