Big Enzo blasts out Hungarian champ in one round to keep dream of Cleverly clash alive
Former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli and rising cruiserweight prospect Tony Conquest both scored impressive wins at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London last night.
31 year old Maccarinelli proved in his first fight as a light heavyweight that he is still one of the best one-round bangers in boxing - blasting out the previously undefeated Hungarian Gyorgy Marosi in just 91 seconds. Maccarinelli looked in tremendous shape, and towered over his 5'10'' opponent. He dominated the opening minute of the bout with a fast left jab, then staggered his man with a vicious left hook. A follow up right hand had Marosi out on his feet, and referee Jeff Hinds decided he had seen enough. The win upped Maccarinelli's record to 33-5 with 26 KO's (13 in 1 round), while the 34 year old Marosi slipped to 12-1 (8 KOs).
After the bout, a jubilant Maccarinelli told BoxNation: ''I always should have been a light heavyweight. With a strict diet I make the weight easily. I hit as hard as ever at light heavyweight.''
The likeable Maccarinelli is determined to rebuild his career and become the first Welshman to become world champion twice. He is now focused on meeting newly crowned Commonwealth champion Ovill McKenzie in 2012, with his ultimate target being an all-Welsh dream fight with WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly, a bout that would surely fill Cardiff's Millennium Stadium should it come off.
The win ended a 14 month break from the ring for Enzo, who has recently been filling in his time working as an expert pundit for Frank Warrens BoxNation TV channel. 12 year pro veteran Maccarinelli held the WBO cruiserweight title from 2006 to 2008, defeating quality fighters like Marcelo Dominguez, Bobby Gunn and Wayne Braithwaite. He lost his title when he was stopped in two rounds by David Haye in a world cruiserweight unification bout.
Subsequent knockout losses against world ranked cruiserweights Ola Afolabi, Denis Lebedev and Alexander Frenkel left fight fans concerned as to Enzo's future in boxing. It was during his subsequent 14 month absence from the ring that Maccarinelli discussed dropping down to light heavyweight with his trainer Enzo Calzaghe.
At 6'4'', Maccarinelli is exceptionally tall for a light heavyweight, but he claims now he was a relatively slight cruiserweight, and 175 lbs is a more natural fighting weight for him. The great Bob Foster, arguably the best light heavyweight of all time, also stood 6'4'', so Enzo is in excellent company.
Also on the York Hall bill, rising cruiserweight prospect Tony Conquest raised his record to eight straight victories with a landslide 10 round points decision over Londoner Toks Owoh to win the vacant Southern Area cruiserweights title. Although 27 year old Conquest has been a professional for little more than two years, he is already regarded by many experts as the best cruiserweight prospect in Britain.
A shade under 6'3" tall, the strongly built Conquest still needs to work on getting more power into his punches (just two KOs), but in terms of boxing ability he already looks the finished article. 39-year-old Owoh went in to last night's fight on the back of four straight wins. A former sparring partner of the great Roy Jones Jr, Owoh had boxed quality opponents like Glen Johnson and Omar Sheika during his 16 year pro career, yet he had no answer to Conquest's speed and work rate, and lost every round on referee Ken Curtis's scorecard.
After the win, a clearly happy Conquest told BoxNation as he gazed at his championship belt: ''It's fantastic! Toks is a former world title contender and he's been in there with Glen Johnson. He knows what to do on the inside and he mucks you around a bit. I think the difference was a little bit of speed. He's a fit 39-year-old, he couldn't half sling it.''
Essex boy Conquest originally got into boxing as a means of losing weight after reaching a dangerously obese 280 pounds. Now down to a fighting weight of 200 pounds, he is closing in on a British title fight against newly crowned cruiserweight champion Leon Williams that could happen in 2012.
