Celestino Caballero Defeats Jonathan Victor Barros to win WBA Featherweight Title

35 year old Panamanian marvel gets sweet revenge in rematch

Panama's Celestino Caballero won a twelve round unanimous decision over Argentinian Jonathan Victor Barros to capture the WBA featherweight title at the Luna Park Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The fight was a rematch -  the pair met in July of this year, with Barros winning a controversial twelve round split decision, despite hitting the canvas in the first and the ninth rounds. After the decision was announced, the Caballero camp filed an official protest, and the WBA ordered an immediate rematch.
In the rematch it was the 35 year old Caballero (35-4, 23 KO's) who made the faster start, and from the second round through to the fourth, the pair exchanged blistering shots. The 5' 11'' Caballero had success with his long punches from the outside, but many of his shots were missing the target. Barros stayed busy on the inside, having success with quick combinations to the body and head, much to the delight of the crowd.

The fourth was a good round for the champion, but Caballero stunned Barros with a huge shot in the fifth – turning the tide of the fight. From then on, Caballero did just do enough to edge more rounds than Barros. There were some furious exchanges in the eighth and tenth rounds, with Caballero catching Barros once again with big punches in the eleventh. The Argentinian was in desperate trouble and twice lost his mouthpiece, but Caballero couldn't finish him off.

Caballero coasted the final round, and emerged soon after with a unanimous decision and the WBA featherweight championship belt. 27 year old Barros saw his record dip to 33-2-1 with 18 KO's.

Caballero, the former WBA and IBF super bantamweight champion, had dropped back-to-back split decisions going into this fight, losing to American Jason Litzau in Las Vegas November 2010 and Barros earlier this year  – so this win was a sweet redemption for the Panamanian. With one win apiece, Caballero vs Barros III looks a certainty in 2012.
